The biggest flaw in Hogwarts Legacy is Quidditch

The dedicated sport of the wizarding world of Harry Potter gets its own (official) video game. On Monday, WB Games and developer Unbroken Studios announced Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions; it is a fast-paced multiplayer game based on the favorite hobby of Hogwarts wizards and witches, which will be released on consoles and PCs.

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions will fill a gap in the recent franchise-based game Hogwarts Legacy, which in particular did not include a playable version of Quidditch. And that’s all that Quidditch Champions seem to be, based on the game’s FAQ describing it as “a complete, standalone Quidditch experience” that “engages players in the sport of Quidditch and other broomstick adventures together with their friends in a competitive multiplayer environment.”Like the legacy of Hogwarts, the characters of the Quidditch champions are created by the players.

According to Wb Games, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions has been in development “for several years” by Los Angeles-based Unbroken Studios, who previously released the action royale game Mad Max-Y Fractured Lands and are helping Rocksteady Studios with the development of self-destruction Squad: finish the Justice League.

Players can sign up to try the game on the official website of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. A release date for the game has not been announced.

Like Hogwarts Legacy, WB Games notes in an FAQ that its new quidditch game “remains true to [Harry Potter author] Jk Rowling’s original vision”, but that the studio’s projects “were not written by JK Rowling and will not be direct adaptations of the books and films.”

Some longtime Harry Potter fans have vowed to buy and play Hogwarts’ legacy based on Rowling’s other writings-namely, a contradictory 2020 essay posted on her personal website outlining her views on gender identity and skepticism about transgender-inclusive laws and policies, and her repetition of those views on her personal Twitter. Fans playing a version of Quidditch in real life have since decided to distance themselves from Rowling and her work, renaming her interpretation of the sport to quadball.

Hogwarts Legacy managed to sell above expectations with over 12 million copies sold in the first two weeks. Warner Bros. is also showing no signs of slowing down the exploitation of Harry Potter’s intellectual property with a new live-action adaptation of the seven-book series coming to HBO. Rowling will be directly involved in this project as an executive producer.

While other Harry Potter video game adaptations have introduced Quidditch as a playable element, including Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4, the only other official game dedicated to the sport was Harry Potter: Quidditch World Championship 2003, released for Game Boy Advance, GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox. An unofficial quidditch-inspired game called Broomstick League was in development, but this title was removed from Steam in 2020.
